  • Naval ship designations are not necessarily abbreviations, and may not "mean" anything. The designation for a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier is CVN. CV = Aircraft carrier, N = nuclear powered. As far as where CV comes from, many of the first aircraft carriers in the 1920's were converted from cruisers, which had the designation C. Aircraft transport ships were designated V.
