  • For much of human history, both men and women had long hair, and men usually had long beards as well. In the 4th century BC Alexander the Great of Macedonia had his soldiers wear short hair and shave off their beards, so that their ememies couldn't grab their hair or beards in battle. The Romans were the first culture where all the men generally wore their hair short and shaved their beards, again for military reasons. After Rome conquered most of Europe and the Mediterranean, short hair came to be associated with what Rome stood for: civilization, "law and order", loyalty to the state, conservatism, military discipline, etc. Long hair was associated with barbarians, women, "effeminate" greek philosophers and wimpy romantics. The Roman senate took a dim view of emperors like Hadrian who "went Greek" by wearing a beard and longer hair. When the germanic "barbarian" tribes overran the West in the 5th century AD, many of them were already partly Romanized -- i.e. they had converted to Christianity, served in the Roman army and learned to appreciate Roman culture. Although many continued to wear their hair long, the idea of men's short hair standing for civilization, law and discipline was preserved, and has continued to the present day.
  • Usually men have short hair because it's the common standard that we're to have short hair because we look like men. However, the standard for women is to have long hair because long hair is a woman's "crown." Although, some people are rebels; whereupon, some men will have long hair and women will have short hair. The major problem with this is you can easily get confused! You might see a person with long hair and say, "Excuse ma'am," when it's a guy, so that can lead to an embarrassing situation. Other than that, that's why! I hope this helps!
  • In current society, men wear their hair short to fit into their social group. If you have short hair or a bald fade you probably hang with a group that wears a similar fasion. Short hair is low maintenance as well, it drys and styles faster after a shower. However there are men who have longer hair because in their social circle its a non-conformist statement and express' individuality and freedom. Women on the other hand have longer hair because it's one of their most attractive features. Long hair frames her face and draws attention to her from a distance. Many men prefer a woman with shoulder length hair or longer...the longer the better in my book but every man has his own preferance.
  • We as humans are set apart from the rest of the animal kingdom where male species of certain animals are usually very ornate and colorful whereas the female is often dull and drab in color. Why else is it that the lion has a mane, and the lioness does not? Courting rituals have much to do with it.. though It seems that humanity has reversed this universal order and opted to place the emphasis on the female, not the male. To us it is the simple characteristics that differentiate Man from Woman. Men are associated with short hair, and Women with long hair. Another example of social gender differentiation is pants vs. skirts, there are obvious differences with respect to either gender. Nowadays it seems, I see a lot more men with hair that is liberated and free to grow to whatever length they desire. Perhaps mankind is becoming more ambiguous, however you may choose to contend with the idea. Though when all is said and done, it boils down to the fact that hair length is a very personal trait. No two heads of hair are alike, and whether you are male or female the option is yours.. short or long, even in-between! It is almost as argueable to ask why men and women have different hair lengths as it is to ask why one has an Adam's Apple and the other does not. For being a man with long hair, I have to say that my answer to this question is just as variable as hair itself. - Anonymous
  • I always wonder why men seem to get offended when a lady has a shaved head or short hair but it is ok for men to have long hair? Its just socially acceptable. I am 21 years old and recently shaved my head ( used to bleach it so it was damaged beyond repair) I get alot of looks from people and my boyfriend gets more. It probably looks like he is with a lesbian. Ha.
  • i think that women have a certain gene that expose them to grow long hair than man. other answer i have is that traditionally women have long hair cause it contributes to or symbolizes womenness. or otherwise it's just their identity which identifies them from men most of the time. just like adam's apple distinguishes men from women. other idea i have is that, women have long hair coz God made them so...Fuck it !!!
  • There are exceptions to every rule but generally that is how it goes, I think.
  • It depends on the culture http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Long_hair
  • Current mainstream fashion.
  • Women usually have longer hair than men cus it's to keep them warm cus they sit on their asses doing nothing whereas us men are out working our nuts off & we'd overheat! Im also a motorcyclist so longhair wud be a nuisance in the helmet.
  • Go ask the beatles.. How young are ya? 15? Or am I still guessing to high? Jeez..
  • Maybe women get cold more easily. No, just kidding. I think it's cause long hair is just beautiful.
  • My hairs past my shoulders. Weird eh?
  • heh heh - good question. Might be genetics. Females of any species are always the most "flashy" so that they could fly out of the nest to distract predators in order to save the babies. Males with long hair in battle find it a detriment to survival, whereas females found long hair an attribute for attracting males to mate with. Evolution bred beards out of females for a reason.
  • One other reason could be some of the teachings in the Bible ... where a woman's hair was worn long as a covering, and men's hair short to set them apart (I Cor.11:14-16). There was SOME teaching that a man having short hair was a "shame" to him, but the apostle Paul said it wasn't anything to really lose sleep over.
