I would leave it for a few days. Shop bought dye has very strong chemicals in it and putting anything on it straight away will dry your hair out. Lemon will naturally lighten hair but only slightly.

The hair color you bought has a developer, usually peroxide,(the stuff you mixed with the color) this is what makes it work. Since the color you applied was lighter than your hair the effect was to lighten your hair. When you lighten brown hair it goes through stages of red to gold to yellow to white as more color is lifted from your hair. Thus the coppery color. If you want to get to med brown without the red shades the easiest thing to do is apply a simi-permanent color like loving care or one of the products that gradually washes out over a period of 6 to 8 weeks. Choose a color with "ash" in the name, such as light ash brown if you want to get away from the red. This will not make your hair lighter but will take away the red. If you are trying to cover gray you will need to reapply when it starts to fade. Hope this helps
