  • No. Western civilization has lasted for thousands of years and will continue for long after I am dead and buried.
  • Unlikely. Someone said they didn't know how World War III would be fought but WW IV would be fought with sticks and stones. So if somebody starts setting off nuclear devices we could wipe out western civ in a very short time. So it is possible. But still unlikely. There is a Doomsday Clock that measures the likelihood of annihilation and it is further away from the fatal hour than it used to be. Other than such a catastrophe, I would expect western civ to limp along for another few hundred years. China and Japan and India are moving upward and coming into their own. Someday, perhaps sooner than we think, they may surpass whatever it is we call western civilization. But I still think we're good for the rest of this century. Subject to the above.
  • All seemingly great civilizations in history have ultimately come to an end. They emerge, become strong, and then colapse. Having said this, their influence carries on. For example, we still use greek characters for a lot of the constants in mathematics. Colapse, given history, it may. But it will no doubt influence the civilization that is to surpass it.
  • I think so, cuase now we build shopping malls instead of building civilizations. -Bill Bryson
  • I think it will, because most money is not in real things, and as such it has no real value.
  • Yes.. and it wont be because of these needless wars... it will more likely be because of the economy.
  • I think so, and I think that credit expansion will be to blame. Our entire economy is based on credit expansion - which can do nothing but to lead in turmoil. How can borrowing more and more money be good for the economy? It can't. Pretty soon banks will fail because of defaults on bad business and housing loans, that, my friend will be the beginning...
  • No , not that soon.
  • I sometimes think it might, to be honest.
  • Western Civilization will definitely not collapse. It's influence on world affairs will. However, like all civilizations, it will probably rise up again, perhaps with some major changes. We probably won't recognise it as Western Civilisation. Western Civilisation started as Greek civilisation(with other civilisation at par with it), went through a decline and re-emerged as the Roman Empire. The present Western civilisation as we know it is only about 400 years. Other civilisations have filled those gaps and will continue to do so. I believe only 2 civilisations will always stand out. Western and Chinese civilisations are the only civilisations that survived the test of time. History have proven that.
  • hopefully it will be taken over by a global civilisation, a better one of course..
