Volkswagen Karmann Ghia

Volkswagen Karmann Ghia To people in the 1950s, Volkswagen was the car company that made the Beetle and the Micro Bus, both stalwarts of dependability and quirky charm. Not style. So the last thing the public ever expected was the Karmann-Ghia. Built on the Bettle's platform, this sporty-looking coupe was penned by the Italian design house Ghia. Their svelte design is shrouded in mystery, with some claiming that there were American design influences at play. Either way, the very eye-pleasing result proved popular enough to run production all the way through to 1974. If anything, the Karmann-Ghia proved that Volswagen was capable of making more than just a practical "people's car".

Contrary to the previous respondent, the car driven by 'Charlie' in the film Topgun isnt a VW Karmann Ghia. From the brief glimps I can get of it on the internet it is a Porsche Roadster.
