There's a strobe light tool you can use to check the TDC (Top dead center). You connect it to the #1 cylinder ignition wire, and the battery, and you use that to check marks on the harmonic balancer, and according to that, you rotate the distributor to match the timing marks. Since it's a '97, it might be beyond that technology, but you might give that a shot.

Timing light wont work on a 97. You need a snap on scanner. The MT 2500 works well. What you need to do is set the "sync signal" it's not to complicated but if you don't have the right tools and knowledge your out in left field. If you haven't removed the distributor or turned it at all I don't think it's that. If you have moved it try to get a mirror and a light down behind the engine. The factory marked the distributor shaft and the intake manifold with a paint pen after the timing was set. Just reline the marks and you should be good. There is a service bulletin on the 96-2000 5.0 and 5.7 GM motors. Can't think of the TSB number but it involves a faulty EGR valve on these engines. (Same for the 4.3 as well)A replacement is available from your dealer. Ive had luck with just cleaning them. GM also had a problem withpluged injectors and faulty fuel pressure regulators on higher mileage motors. Is your check engine light on?
