When speaking, putting 'an' in front of a word beginning with a vowel, makes the speech more fluent. Using just 'a', in front of a word beginning with a vowel, makes the speech awkward - e.g. a apple, a orange, sounds odd, and makes the speech 'stop' temporarily.
