Do you think the government holds back their cure for diseases, like the common cold and HIV because they make significantly more money from people being sick?

I would like to believe that they were not that shallow or selfish of human life...I think if they had the cure, they would be making WAY more money then treating it...;)

I would think that even if the US govt did that, the cure would get released somewhere, and eventually we'd find out.

I suppose it is possible - anything is possible. It would be grossly negligent and unethical if that was the case, however, and I don't doubt that it would eventually be revealed. However, I (perhaps naively) believe that most Western Governments, generally, have their peoples best interests at heart.

They make lots more money by having you go to work and pay income taxes and FICA, and for that matter drive to work--governments make between three and four times as much off a gallon of gas as the oil companies do.

No. Think about it. "The government" is composed of individuals. All have spouses, children, parents. If there were cures available, they'd want them to be available for themselves and their loved ones. If they secretly got the cures, I don't think for a second that the secret would stay secret.
