Saint Bernard was born in 1090 in the Chateau of Fontaines-les Dijon, into the nobility of Burgundy. In 1112, he entered the Citeaux monastery as a novice, and remained at least technically a member of that establishment for the rest of his life As a monk and priest, Bernard was an outstanding orator, and many of his sermons became part of the Catholic Liturgy. His positions were, even then, conservative, and his temprament fiery. Bernard was active in church politics and impressed both clergy and nobility with his fiery oratory during the schism of Anacletus in 1130, which he was instrumental in resolving. He was also an opponent of Peter Abelard, a teacher and theologian of the Cathedral School of Paris. Abelard's writings were accessible and popular, arguing for the application of reason to church doctrine. Bernard's influenced the Pope to declare Abelard's teachings heretical. Bernard died in 1153 and was canonised in 1174.
