It depends... If the employee is doing a good job and they are dependable, yes I would. If they were average maybe, if they were less than average, I wouldn't... and I would hope they would quit so I didn't have to fire them.

I would always give a cost of living increase no matter what. As a manager, I gave performance reviews regularly and when there was a budget, I always gave merit raises if they were deserved. Money is the reason people work for other people. Over the years, I have learned that if you take care of your employees, they will take care of you, making a business successful. There are plenty of other ways to create a great work environment for your employees, but money makes the top three for sure.

did anyone get a raise? If it was a poor fiscal year, they may not have the $$ to dole out raises. And yes, I would hint it... and if they didn't get the subtle hints, I would have to have the talk. Everyone should have a chance at success, and if I can't provide it for an employee I would want them to have the chance to get the job that will help them achieve it.

It depends on the employee's performance, the tasks that the employee handles, the workload, the output of his/her job, the knowledge and general the importance he/she posses. If all the above are being satisfied, then i would give my employee a raise. Employees make the business to succeed. They are important and they should be kept motivated. Don't underestimate their knowledge and their experience. It's more costly to seek for other employee for a specific task and time consuming to gain expertise in the empty place.
