Is there a baby monitor on the market that does NOT require the base (not the reciever) to be pluuged in? So the entire system can run off batteries?

Yes, but they run through batteries fairly quickly. We used The First Years brand system called Peace of Mind. It appears there is a new version out which runs on a rechargeable battery pack instead of straight batteries, and the older ones are still available. I purchased this one because it was top rated by Consumer Reports, and I was very happy with it.
