Get a screwdriver and pry out the ECU. You couldn't read them but you'd pull them from the car. Take em whereever you want :) I don't know of a way to retrieve codes without a scanner. You could just get a list of the codes and check every component on the list until you find the problem. Then fix the problem and it will turn the light off :) (might want to set aside a week or so)

Usually under the dash toward the front there is a daignostic hook up. Hopefully I am right on the location. When diagnostic became available one could take a wire and hook one into the ground connection then loop it into the diagnostic port and turn on the key and make a written record of flashes emitting from one of the dashboard gauges or check engine light. You can take the flash numbers (meaning three pause two pause the four )like morse code and compare them to the codes that are available in a Haynes manual under the emissions control section. Now this is general information so I would read the manual under emissions control before playing with the diagnostics. Mr Bill
