You're reading If a car with an automatic transmission moves forward at a few miles per hour without the gas pedal being pressed on, will it continue to drive forward after one has been in an accident if no one puts the brake on or turns the car off?

interesting, I was hoping someone would tell me there was a safety feature that stopped cars from doing that. I suppose one will be installed after a non-fatal accident becomes one when someone's car drives off a cliff!

Not really. The safety feature would mean that there would have to be a brake installed in the torque converter, which would be expensive. You'd basically need 2 torque converters...That or you'd need to deactivate a locking mechanism before you want to move the car using the engine. It would just be idiotic. When you look at it from the perspective of a collision, an engine-cutting device is more practical. Some vehicles have fuel pump shutoffs that cut the flow of fuel to a vehicle in the event of a detected collision. That's a better solution.

that's what I meant, something that would just turn off the engine - I hope my car has one :oP you sure seem to know a decent amount about cars

I drive em everyday and I work on em. I refuse to be one of those people that say 'I drive a red car!'. I like to know as much as I can about everything I use, then expand from there. I trust my life to cars, so I sorta want to know how it all works.

good point, I guess I should go grab some books and read up on cars too! I only know the basics, like how to change my oil, spark plugs, brakes, and tires. :o)
