  • Interesting question and one that is causing a lot of problems for the Japanese. If we focus on the military then,knowing we have the "power" we (as a country) can take into account, when negotiating with another country, the existence of our military. If, on the other hand, we have only a self-defense force, we negotiate based on merit and the legitimacy of our position rather than by waving the implication of our military. Perhaps it is a question of national philosophy. Producing a large military establishment requires an economic commitment, and a moral commitment. Whether the "moral" issue is good or bad is the question. Personally, I regret that any country feels the need of a military. One more nation with a military doesn't lessen the danger.
  • Japan of 2007 is a very different Japan than at the end of WW2. If Germany has been forgiven and has had full rights (including military ones) restored, why not Japan? She is an ally, after all.
