I think it truly depends on the modern edition your referring to. There were certainly Latin translations and German, Russian, French, Etc. Any of these could have been references for a modern edition

The Cathilic Bible was in Latin for centuries. So the priest could give you the Church's interpretation.

The Old testement manuscripts were written in Hebrew and the new testament manuscripts were written in greek and then translated into various other languages. mainly latin for a long time, till people realised they were being spoonfed by the Catholic church. Hope it helps.. read your bibe, John 3:16 tells us that Jesus died to take the punishment from God for OUR sins, meaning that justice was done and we can be Forgiven and accepted when we turn to God.
