Why are we such materialistic people? How did it come to this?

Because somewhere along the way we lost sight of what our lives should be. The invention of new technology, while great in many ways, has made many people unable to live without a "sweet ride", the newest computer, and a plasma screen. They dig themselves further in debt all the while. Now society looks down upon those that don't have the "newest" or the "fastest". I myself have trouble tearing myself away from the computer, do I blame this on society? nope. But If I didn't have all these cool websites to look at... :P
