I find all of Weber's stuff pretty awful. Not sure why, but I absolutely detest his music. Having said that, I suppose if I had to pick a "best" one, it would be JC Superstar.

Webber stuff comes in two vaieties: 1) silly, lame, pop, vapid, tripe (Cats, Midnight Express, Joseph) and 2) pretensious, pompous, overblown extravaganzas that take lofty themes and then empty them -- who else would create a musical about Eva Peron without politics or Jesus Christ without religion? That being said, I do love the music to Phantom (probably because he stole most of it from Puccini), and I have to admit that Evita is great theater (the stage version, not the horrendous Maddona film version that turns Eva from a cold, calculating, vicious, tooth & claw social climber with a grudge -- and yet one you still find oddly compelling and sympathetic -- to a poor, pathetic, wafe who lucks out ... but doesn't (if I wanted that story again, I'd just re-read ANYTHING by Dickens.)) On the other hand, the film version of Phantom hugely improves on the stage version, even with the ridiculous and glaringly obvious breaks in continuity when they sing "Past the Point of No Return". I just want to see it performed by the entire cast from Looney Tunes, with Bugs as Christine, Daffy as Carlotta, Wile E. as Raoul, Porky and Sylvester as Firmin and Andre, Tweety as Meg, Granny as Mdme Giry, Foghorn as Piangi, Dog as Joseph Buquet, Marvin Martian as the Auctioneer, and Elmer in the title role. Now THAT would be a classic!
