  • Adelfinski is more likely Polish, Adelfinsky is more likely Russian or some other E. European country. However, they both could be either Polish or East European. My guess is they are Polish people who are Russian citizens. -in means "son of" in Russian, -ski (and occassionally -sky) are found in Poland and mean "originating from." So, "son of Adelf" who want people to know that they originate from Poland. That's what I'd say. “Ov”, “off”, “in”, “vich” and “ev” at the end of a Russian surname indicate the surname means “son of ____” (whatever). It should also be noted that “off” is often the “English” version of “ov.” It is also used by Russians to make their name sound more aristocratic.
