Why do grocery stores buy so many checkout line registers if they only keep 3 or 4 open?

It just depends on how busy they are and how many people are scheduled to work. If you notice during the holiday seasons and Sunday afternoons, almost all of them are open.

ugh. our walmart is the WORST at this. they'll have lines trailing as far as the eye can see and they'll only have a whole 2 cashiers working. grr.

For the same reason that they put chocolate next to the checkout queue - to tease you. ;)

The exact same reasons banks did the same thing, 8 tellar wondows, only 3 tellars ? ITS ons of the great mysteries of LIFE , and we will NEVER know... :)
