  • A Mormon is member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Mormon is a nickname given to us by the early enemies of the Church because of our belief in the Book of Mormon as a book of scripture along with the Bible. However, many of us don't really like that term as it implies that we worship someone called Mormon. (Mormon was a prophet of God just like Moses and Samuel, but not a deity.) Personally I prefer the term Latter-day Saint. • The word "Mormon," when used alone, is generally used to mean a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which was founded in 1830 and is now headquartered in Salt Lake City, Utah USA. There are also a number of offshoot churches which use the Book of Mormon as scripture, and members of these may also be called "Mormons." Many Latter-day Saints object to the use of the term, which was originally used as a derogatory label; however, the Church itself has often used the word as a description, including in the name of the world-famous Mormon Tabernacle Choir and in public service announcements in the 1970s and '80s which were ". . .brought to you by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints -- the 'Mormons.'" An important book by a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles was titled simply "Mormon Doctrine." Thus, it is a legitimate term to use in describing a member of the Church. This parallels another derogatory label which was embraced and adopted by the group which it described -- "Yankee."
