There is a genetic disorder called porphyria. It's a blood disorder with a lot of really odd symptoms that are now understood but for this explanation we really don;t have to go too deep into it. Here are some things the person might experience.

    1) Extremely vulnerability to sunlight. In fact, they are so weak to UV that they must stay inside all the time.

    2) Madness and dimentia.

    3) The skin along the fingernail beds and gumlines will retract, making the person appear to have fangs and long fingernails.

    4) A constant need for blood treatments.

So lets go back about 200 or 300 hundred years to Europe where it was discovered. You go into a dark basement only to find a crazed person with long teeth and claws, who is clearly out of their mind. They are pale from being inside all the time with strange sores all over their body. Now remember that they needed constant blood transfusions to stay alive, but this is way before any blood transfer technology. The only way to get blood was to drink it from a person or an animal. This is where the legend of vampires began....hope this helps

I believe that there are vampires, or were, from an applied historical context concerning believable and accredited record of their possible existence. Whether the type of vampire sucks blood in a cave, in the historical context, or sucks the life of this nation like President Bush is yet to be defined.

If you mean magical living corpses who turn into bats and stuff? No.

If you mean pathetic human cyphers who read Laurell K. Hamilton novels, listen to Bauhaus and The Cure while sipping fake absinthe liqueurs, and try to make themselves feel special and important by pretending to be vampires and drinking each others' blood, then yes.

Prophyria is the name of this disease. Again severe reactions to sunlight. Due to almost no haemoglobin being in the body the patient was given large amounts of blood to drink in order to absorb the haemoglobin through the lining of the stomach. Recessive gums producing a fang like appearence. Give a little overexaggeration you have a vampire.

That depends on your definition of vampire.
What you believe is YOUR reality, but not necessarily the reality of other people, who will believe differently.
There are several medical conditions, various psychosis, and historical events that researchers believe led to the myths of vampires.
    I say "myth" advisedly here.
1.Are there people who drink blood and shun sunlight? Most definitely. Are they sane? Yes, most of them.
2.Are there people who are allergic to sunlight? Yes, although in most it is just an extreme sensitivity. In others it is a disease involving lack of hemoglobin.
3.Are there madmen who believe themselves to be the incarnation of myth? All too common, unfortunately.
4.Are there blood-drinking vampire bats? Definitely. But it is my understanding that they do not attack humans or animals unless they are sick, in fact, their diet is usually quite harmless and isn't at all blood-dependant.
    5. Are there super-natural entities in this world who mean humans harm? It is my belief that there are, [and that they are fallen angels, who can mimic many things and deliberately play on the fears/beliefs of people to seperate them from a loving God.] I think most people would agree that there are, although they may disagree about what they are.
    6. Historically... rye, a grain that was easy to grow in England and Europe and was in certain time periods a staple food, spoils easily. When it spoils, it can cause confusion and hallucinations, even death. There are instances of whole villages consuming tainted rye, and either dying outright, with weird physical symptoms, or actually killing each other off in their food-poisoning-induced temporary madness. It is thought that some of the tales of murderous vampires/werewolves arise from these incidences.
    7. I won't comment on empathic or psi vampires, but there are many sorts of vampires, ranging from the common misquito to financial vampires which are nearly as common...<laugh>

Vampirism in the true sense , not the fetish-lifestyle sense of voluntary blood drinking does exist. The medical name for the disease is Renfield Syndrome. The name comes from the character in the Dracula novel. It is extremely rare. Produces powerful cravings for blood.

I always had this thing....I thought vampires were really.....attractive in the dark, mysterious, gothy, type!!! and as much as i want to believe there are such mysterious creatures as vampires...i sadly know there arent any such thing as we see in the movies, or we read in the books,.....after reading Twilight, I became really, really, really, depressed....sadly realizing that i could never be able to be one of those, beautiful, lustfull, creatures!! I only hope that i could have helped someone else see...that no matter how much you want something....it doesnt mean it will always happen...or come true!!! I know that now....unfortunatley!!! but the answer to your question..."do vampires really exist?" is no they dont....people want to hear that they saw one or it sucked the energy out of them!! giving them hope that if there is one kind that means the rest might be out there....no im sorry to say that if you were looking for the truthfull answer to your question....you dont have to look any further. Thnk you for taking the time to read my answer and i hope that you got what you were looking for. :)

Vampires do exist. And they are NOT just blood drinkers!!

Blood drinkers are Sanguinarians. There is no scientifically proven reason why they drink blood. Sanguinarianism is NOT a fetish. Blood fetishists are NOT vampires. They are just people who are blood fetishists. Sanguinarians usually "awaken" to their vampirism in their late teens (around age 18) and find that they have a need for blood. Like an addiction without even drinking it first.

There are also Psi-vamps... Psionic vamps, "psychic" vampires (very non-pc way of saying it). They also "awaken" around their late teens, though it is actually more common to awaken to psionic vampirism after a particularly stressful event (divorce) or physically traumatic event (scarlet fever in my case). Not everyone will become psi after these events. Not all psis even. It's just somewhat common for a psi to awaken from an experience like that.

As well, a third kind of vampires are emotional vampires. These people get giddy when they are around people with strong emotions, and tend to force these emotions (anger, fear, laughter, sadness) out of people around them.

Vampirism can be compared to alot of medical problems to explain just how it feels. As well as being a psivamp, I have hypothyroidism. This causes me to have to take hormones to keep my body functioning normally. The same goes for my vampirism. If I do not intake psionic energy (through thunderstorms, or other peoples energy that they let off) then I become depressed, fatigued, all the classic symptoms of needing something that your body is just not creating itself.

One more note. Vampires are not freaks. They cannot turn into bats, they CAN go out in sunlight (though we still get sunburnt!), If a vampire claims to hate sunlight, ask them what color their eyes are! (light colored eyes, vampire or not, hurt in bright lights!) We dont fly, we dont have fangs, we dont have other psychic powers that every other human cannot have. WE ARE HUMAN! We are not all goths. Personally, im a 22 year old mother and wife, I have been awakened for 15 years. I don't dress in all black. I wear sunglasses outside because i have light grey eyes and the sun hurts. I have a family like all of you, a job at the grocery store to support my family, I pay my bills, and if i dont i will get in trouble. Being a vampire is not romantic. At all. being a vampire is a painfully troubling thing. If i dont feed, i feel physically fatigued and bad. Stakes to our hearts will kill us. But it will kill any human. Sunlight will not make us burst into flames, turn into dust, or any of those myths. we do not sleep in coffins, we sleep in beds like everyone else.

If you came to this question looking for help because you think you are a vampire, please go to http://www.sanguinarius.org
It is a support site for us. It's not just for sanguinarians, but all vampires.

Not the way vampires are depicted in movies. But there is a disease that is extremely rare and is rejected by most of the medical community since it is so rare. This disease shows a couple of symtoms that the vampires of movies have. They are:

    1. The inflicted do desire blood because their bodies produce very low amounts of hemoglobin. What enables them to be drawn to blood is still a mystery.

    2. The inflicted are very sensitive to sunlight. Their eyes are sensitive to the point that even most sunglasses can't help. The skin gets very bad sunburns. All this is due to the low amounts of hemoglobin.

The inflicted aren't "allergic" to garlic. Holy objects don't burn their skin. And a stake to the heart will kill them, but only because they are human. And the sun doesn't kill them.

Factoid#24 - Some scientists to believe that the myth of modern vampires started because of this.

    1. There are no real vampires. Cut and paste time, as it is too much work to type this out over and over so here goes. A brief discussion of the human digestive system and then the probable vampire population given an exponential growth rate should explain why vampires are not possible.
    2. Vampires do not exist. Period. The human body is not designed to process large amounts of blood for nutrition. There is not enough protein, carbohydrates, and fats present in blood to maintain a complex creature such as Homo Sapiens or any theorized offshoot mutations. When a human ingests food it is first broken up by chewing, then churned up in the stomach with digestive juices to form a bolus called chyme. It then passes into the small intestine where it mixes with bile salts which continue breaking it down on a molecular basis, mostly affecting fats at this point. The broken down nutrients pass through the wall of the intestines and into the bloodstream where they are carried to each cell or stored for later use. Indigestible bulk continues through the intestines, turning a dark brown from the bile. Water is absorbed from this mass in the large intestine depending on the needs of the body - a well-hydrated person will usually have a softer stool than a dehydrated person will. Water also enters the bloodstream, and this is what helps to maintain blood pressure. The pressure tends to balance itself in a healthy person because the bloodstream goes through a formation in the kidney called the Loop of Henle, where the narrowing blood vessel forces excess water and cellular waste such as urea out through the cellular wall into the kidneys, where it is excreted through the ureters into the bladder, and then out of the body via the urethral passageway.

    3. IMPORTANT - A person physically unable to process his own food for nutrition therefore also could not process blood - it's the same process. Ingested blood does not transmit directly to the veins anyway - it would be chemically broken down by the digestive system.

    4. Theoretical ingestion of blood to supply these nutrients would therefore have to occur at least once a day, and would require the ingestion of the entire blood supply which could not happen as the stomach is far too small to hold that much liquid volume. Furthermore, such a mass would be difficult to pass thru the intestines as it has no fibrous bulk, would create an intestinal impaction, causing massive vomiting from the large concentration of iron present, and any "real" vampire would have to eventually expel the waste, which would come out as a black, tarry, smelly goo.

    5. These humans that affect the whole "vampiric lifestyle" are NOT vampires. They are simply humans playing their own little game, in their own little fantasy world, usually pandering to their own little sexual fetish, which may or may not actually be sexual. I too, play my own little game, in the SCA, but mine is a game where the deeds that I do are determined by the strength of my arm and sword - I am a warrior, with just as much skill and ability as any warrior of ancient times. The difference is that I am claiming to be something physically possible: a warrior, and I prove it everytime I strap on my armor and walk onto a SCA battlefield. The so-called "vampires" are claiming to be something physically impossible: a walking corpse, and all they prove is that black Victorian clothing, a pair of false fangs, and a little makeup make for a good Halloween costume - it does not make you a vampire.

    6. Even if a vampire feeds once a week, and his victim also becomes a vampire, that is exponential growth, with four iterations a month. First iteration: One makes one, total two. Second iteration: Two make two, total four. Third iteration: Four make four, total eight. Fourth iteration: Eight make eight, total sixteen. 16 vampires at the end of one month, 256 at the end of the second month, 4096 by the end of the third month, 65,536 by the end of the fourth month, 1,048,476 at the end of the fifth, and 33,572,832 vampires at the end of half a year! Do the math - vampires are a mathematical impossibility. This falls therefore, under the logic of Occam's Razor - which states that when you have removed every impossible answer, whatever remains, no matter how improbable, must be the truth. Since there is no "vampiric plague" swarming the earth, the logical deduction is that they don't exist.

    7. Point of clarification about "vampire" bats: vampire is simply the name we have given them because they do drink blood, same as a flea, mosquito, or spider. Are these creatures vampires? No. They are living creatures, not legendary monsters. Drinking blood does not make you a vampire anymore than eating raw meat makes you a werewolf, although it might make you a mosquito.

8.The humans who profess to be vampires are victims of an all-encompassing self induced delusion. They are as human as you or I, regardless of their claims, and if they ingest HIV tainted blood they can most certainly contract the disease, esp. if they have any cuts, sores, or lesions in and or around their mouth. It is a very dangerous delusion to be laboring under. Note that there is absolutely no scientific or medical proof that these people derive any benefit at all from the ingestion of blood, and even worse are the so-called "psychic" vampires, because their delusion is one that they cannot substantiate with any concrete evidence at all.

In the 'traditional' sense..no. But there have been instances in history of people seeking out victims to drink their blood. These people are called vampires. They do not turn into bats, melt in the sunlight, live for hundreds of years, etc. I think there was one such person in Germany who was somewhat famous for doing this.

A better question would be is existence really vampiric?

In order to exist, all things must draw from a source of energy, no? So existence is vampiric by nature. Therefore, we're all vampires in some fashion or another aren't we? Humans all draw energy for their existence from food, water, sunlight. Plants draw energy from sunlight, water, minerals in the soil. Stars draw energy from complex chemical reactions and nuclear fusion. The tides draw energy from the moon.

Caterpillars become butterflies. Tadpoles become frogs. Creatures undergo radical transfiguration in appearance and their physical makeup all the time. Do the tadpoles who die in the water never having leapt on land doubt the existence of frogs? Perhaps. Do caterpillars who never emerge from their cocoon and who crawl on the ground ever try and raise their heads to see a mythical butterfly?

So, is it possible that there are humans who, during the natural process of death, had an ingrained switch "flipped" and then transfigured into another form? And that they draw their energy from alternate sources?

    You tell me.

i dont believe that vampires exist.
But there are people called human vampires, who love to drink the life blood right out of people, and if you havnt guessed i am one so i can confirm our existance for any who dont believe in us.

I find blood so erotic and irresistible. And love to get it fresh from someones veins, i also feel very uncomfortable in sunlight so i avoid it as much as possible.

so.. yeah, no vampires but definitely Human Vampires

-Well, yeah, there are vampires, but not the movie kind that we would think of.

    Self-proclaimed vampires:

-they wear clip in fangs/get their teeth sharpened (though, thats rather painful...). They may carry around a small necklace with a small bottle on it (they carry their best friends', bf/gfs', mates' blood in it).

They can bite hard enough to draw blood (again, its rather painful), but their respectful of others' enough that they won't do it if they know the other person(s) don't feel comfortable with it, and they will stop if you ask them to.

-Another type of self-proclaimed vampire is the type that don't bite/draw blood from others (draw blood: needles/blades). They seem to have the abillity to suck energy out of their partner... if the partner is willing to let them do that.

By placing their hands over one anothers' hands, and concentrating, they can transfer energy to the other (as is shown on thermal imaging).

-The type of vampires that we think of (movie type), came from the dark ages. Back then, no one knew about certain diseases, or that dying is not the end, it is a process.

A person would get very sick and cough up blood, grow pale, weak before they would die.
Then, the disease would spread, and the town's people would find out who died of the "vampire disease" (those words are written on some tombstones) and dig up the body.

And because this would happen within a couple of months, upon reaching the body, it would be in the process of death.
-The muscles are relaxing/tightening, so it appears that the person is still moving.
-The organs inside are melting, so blood leaks out of the mouth (giving the appearance of drinking blood).
-The organs melting/mucles moving also warm up the body just enough to give the body some color.
-The skin is also disolving, so, the teeth are more visiable.
-And, the organs melting can make some noises, so the body may sound like it's groaning.

-Thus, the living dead- sucking the life out of others.

-There are also the well know, vampire bats, and the less common, vampire beast.
Further information is available (with video if needed) upon asking.

I understand how it is physically impossible as Zenrean is The Twilight Knight say but there have to be things like actual vampires out there even if its only a kind of animal because even though human beings have a great imagination. I do not believe different places thousands of miles apart and mountains apart could think of the same kind of monsters.
    1. They had no way of speaking to each other unless he logic has a way they talked through ocean, lakes, mountains, land masses and forest.
    2. Most storys of vampires all have simmilar features excluding the new imagined up twilight story which was good.
    3. There are many things still in this world we do not know or understand since most science is still a trail and error process.
    4. Not all stories of vampires say that they turn their prey into their kind, it's only if they choose it most the time they just suck the blood dry.(Haven't you guys ever watched an original vampire movie or heard one of the stories?)

  • I've heard of people who claim to be vampires.Of course they are not immortal,or have those awesome powers like in the movies, but I have known them to exist.Let it show on the record, though, that I am not one.:)*+++++*

No, not at all. Someone can master the looks of a vampire depending on how much they admire vamps.
