I do not know if you could find out statistics for the whole world, but I did find one site speaking of America: http://www.harrisinteractive.com/harris_poll/index.asp?PID=359 The survey also found that women are more likely than men to hold both Christian and non-Christian beliefs. African-Americans are more likely than whites and Hispanics to hold Christian beliefs, as are Republicans. The level of belief is generally highest among people without a college education and lowest among those with postgraduate degrees. =============== This at first seemed significant, until I looked at the accompanying tables: For (YES) belief in God the stats were: 90% of all adults 92% High school or less 88% Some college 90% College Grad 85% Post Grad =============== Other specific doctrines showed a bigger difference eg Virgin Birth of Jesus 77/84/78/65/60 but these numbers are still high. ============ One set of stats that did surprise me was a significantly lower rate amongst Latins (who would have higher numbers in the High School or Less Category, came out as less "religious" than whites consistently. =========== So, my guess would be, from these statistics, that, although there would be some support for your question in terms of education (at least in the US, which may not be typical of the world), ethnic breakdown does not support it as strongly. ============= Am I being cynical, however, steelhamster, in thinking that you are trying to insinuate that "religious" people are mostly from the "uneducated"? If so, I am offended on behalf of many "uneducated" people I know in the developing world, who are intelligent and thoughtful, some of whom suffer for having chosen a belief that is not the one accepted as correct by their culture. They are not somehow less intelligent for having had no education, yet still having faith.

I don't think education has a lot to do with your beliefs as far as religion is concerned. Lack of education would be a fault of the government. Religion is more subjective because you are taught the exact same way in your class at school, regardless of your religious persuasion. I don't think a higher belief in religion affects education at all. Good question. =)

If anything people are way less religious than in the past. It seems like intelligence is fading or at least not as appreciated as it was before. I think that it has to do with how many distractions there are today...modern day bread and circuses. Computers, TVs, video games,etc...the brainchildren of a handful of geniuses for use by the masses. Our whole society exists because of and is living off the ideas of a few. The majority of the population neither realizes nor respects that fact.
