  • Tobacco. That's their story and they're sticking to it... <Shifts eyes anxiously back and forth>
  • G'day Tarfon, Thank you for your question. It was tobacco. According to Wikipedia, "Native Americans used tobacco before Europeans arrived in North & South America, and early European settlers in North & South America learned to smoke and brought the practice back to Europe, where it became hugely popular. At extremely high doses, tobacco becomes hallucinogenic; accordingly, Native Americans generally did not use the drug recreationally. Rather, it was often consumed in extraordinarily high quantities and used as an entheogen; generally, this was done only by experienced shamans or medicine men. In addition to being smoked, uncured tobacco was often eaten, drunk as tobacco juice, or used in enemas. Early missionaries often reported on the state caused by tobacco, but as it spread into the west, it was no longer used in such large quantities or for entheogenic purposes." I have attached sources for your reference. • Tobacco!
  • I was hoping it was pot....but from the previous answer it must have been tobacco
  • yep it was tobacco. cannabis is native to asia not the americas.
  • This question is asked as if all native peoples of north america are the same. Many different peoples with many diverse traditions and cultures. Many different things were smoked in "those pipes". Tobacco was the most common, but by far, not the only thing smoked.
  • Tobacco and KINNI-KINNICK were used which is a blend of herbs (NOT POT!) like sumac sage etc as well a mixing with tobacco. Cannabis is native to North America where it still grows wild.
  • Their Future!
  • Remember Cannibis was brought from Europe so the colonials would have rope to make from the hemp! Marijuana is not native to North or South America. Depending on the tribe or what region a certain tribe was in is the type of herb smoked. Indians were long smoking tobacco long before Columbus ever showed up on the Nina, Pinta and the Santa Maria...but the europeans sure liked the tobacco the indians were smoking.
  • They smoked tobacco and wacky weed.
  • Cannabis.
  • Numerous plants and herbs are used for the spiritual rituals including sage (Salvia spp., Artemisia spp.), bear berry (Arctostaphylos uva-ursi), red cedar (Juniperus virginiana), sweet grass (Hierochloe odorata) and tobacco (Nicotiania spp.). Other sacred plant mixtures used are cornmeal and pollen, and a Kinnikinnick. Read more: http://ethnobotany.suite101.com/article.cfm/native_american_spiritual_rituals#ixzz0SWiXWCT8
  • As YARNLADY stated: Salvia and Tobacco were smoked by Native Americans. I know that Salvia is widely sold in part or whole at "Headshops" as "legal smoke". Excuse all the quotes! Okay so for those worried about there being no mind altering leaves in those pipes..... Salvia did and still does the trick. While not nearly as potent as Cannabis, Salvia still offers a nice mental, relaxed atmosphere - ESPECIALLY for non-Cannabis smokers!
