Before I answer the question, let me first define the word brusque for those of you who do not know the word. Brusque: said of a person or their manner, etc: blunt and often impolite; curt The Apostolic, United Pentecostal Church as well as the trinitarian Freewill Holiness churches teach a theology known as Bible Holiness. The Bible Holiness Movement is a body of Christians who profess to be in earnest to get to heaven, by conforming to all the will of God, as made known in His Word. They do not believe that either God or the Bible has changed to accommodate the fashionable tendencies of the age. They solemnly protest against the union of the Church and the world. The conditions of salvation, as they teach, are the same now that they were in the days of the apostles. He who would be a Christian in reality, as well as in name, must deny himself, take up his cross daily, and follow Jesus. He must come out from the world and be separate, and touch not the unclean thing. While this does not exuse them from acting courteous to people, this does explain some of their behavior. Many of them do not participate in activities that the "World" participate in such as listening to non-christian music, women wearing pants or make-up, men or women wearing shorts, women cutting hair and the list goes on and on. Growing up in and around this religion myself I have found that many times this requires us to "shun" some of those around us. We are not shunning the people but rather the activity. That is why sometimes we seem to be impersonal and some people may perceive it as being impolite. We, as a whole, are not. Many are though and my opinion of this is that it is hypocritical of them to act this way. Jesus gave us direct orders to go into ALL the world and preach the Gospel. It is very hard for us to do that if we possess that attitude that many in our realm of believing possess.

First of all I attened an apostolic church where this is not the case. The pastor does not preach do's and don't ie that women must wear dresses, women don't cut their hair and so on. He says women and men should be modest but it is not the job of the pastor to mandate certain clothes or that we should hold to customs of that time. Those you are talking about are mostly white pentecostal/apostolic Org.There are over 100 apostolic organizations. The discription given by "holeeroler" above is not the church I go to or the org. we're in. Impact Apostolic Ministries.

Much of the attitude is due to many disagree yet are afraid of going to hell if they leave, therefore it fosters bitterness toward all that do not adhere to these teachings.

I don't know if your "Apostolic Pentecostals" are the same denominiation as the Apostolics in the UK, but I haven't found them especially "brusque". What I have found is that people of many of the "stricter" denominations, including Apostolics tend to become very insular and there is a temptation to feel superior to, or even fear spiritual "contamination" from those who don't have the same "vision", or don't emphasise the same aspects of "Truth" as they do. This can be true of people in all denominations, but especially true of small self-contained groups. Often these folks never join with other Christians of different traditions and have no idea what goes on outside their narrow sphere of experience. Even their way of talking and theological cliches may be different to others. A Catholic friend for example, once asked me to say a Novena for someone, (what's that????), and I thought a "monstrance" had something to do with "monstrosity". I was also involved for a time in a particular "holiness" house church movement that set great store on having a "new, pure heart". The Salvation Army would say "are you washed in the Blood?", which sounds disgusting to the uninitiated but means almost the same thing! This is probably way off the point, but it is an appeal not to judge others just because they may appear "brusque" to you. They may just be a bit defensive because of being outside their normal situation, or company of their "own" people where they feel safe. Try praying for them, and acting friendly, however they react, and you may find you can break through that barrier.

Well, I have never met any Apostolics that act in that way, but I have heard many horror stories from non-apostolics. I for one, would never treat anyone any way that I would not want to be treated. True Apostolics live in a realm unlike a lot of other people. "WE" are not better than anyone else, and should never act like it, but the SPIRIIT we carry within us IS, because it is the Spirit of God Himself! Becasue we believe what we do and live what we do, that gives us a reputation of being less than friendly. We do live the separation doctrine that God insists upon. And yes, we can get spirits on us from the world if we get too close or hang around them for too long. That is one reason we don't do what the world does.
