  • Anarchy. I firmly believe the majority of people do the right thing because the right thing is imposed on them and deviating brings discipline. Can you imagine WalMart on Saturday afternoon with no laws? Man looks out for himself. Unlike most animals, there's no herd instinct to survive; it's man against man. If you get the chance and haven't done so already, read "Lord of the Flies." It's a great book about just this topic.
  • A crime is defined as an action that breaks the law. If there was no law, there would be no crime. Sadly though, there can not be a half way functioning society either. Most people go by their own moral code rather than law, and for many the moral code is also a reflection of the law (e.g. most would not murder). If it became 'right', that would assume that everyone's moral code had changed entirely and we had entered a parellel universe. If not and whatever nutjob changed the law to make murder mandatory, I bet my bottom dollar there would be such widespread chaos and protests that it would never materialise. Of course, there are some that will do immoral things because they are told to by authority (think Nazi death camps), but I would hope in this day and age that would not be possible to happen to such a degree
  • G'day Tandra01, Thank you for your question. Technically, there would be no crimes because there would be no laws. The English philosopher wrote about this in a famous book called The Leviathan. He claimed that there would be a war of all against all as everyone would perceive that they had a right to every thing. Hobbes famously observed that life under that situation would be "solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short". He posited that we would form a social contract to support authority to ensure security. In this, I believe he is right although I do not agree with other aspects of a leviathan. However, we have situations of dictators emerging from chaotic situations whether it is Hitler from Weimar Republic Germany or Napoleon from revolutionary France or Lenin/Stalin from revolutionary Russia. I have attached sources for your reference. • I think that many people would take advantage but many people still respond to something inside called a conscience. People seem to know what is right and what is wrong. We know it's wrong to murder. We know that stealing isn't right, that fighting isn't good. We may not always listen to our conscience but it's there and some of us would listen to it.
  • Absolutely! It's the way I was raised!
  • How good is the bad thing?
  • I would do the right thing at all times,i would not want to have a conscience that is going to hunt me,that would have me paranoid, looking out the window with no peace whatsoever.)
  • Gods watching and that's enough.
  • Yeah, other people don't affect me as much as me doing something bad
  • Ha ha, I think you have been reading my mail. It is very hard to admit you may not do the right thing if nobody was watching. I, sticking to my rights, feel I maybe incriminating myself by answering truthfully decline to answer at all.
  • I always have and I always will.
  • well, at that time right thing means what I feel right not the things right to law.
  • yup. i like to keep a clean conscience :)
  • Yes. I'm too arrogant to care if anyone's watching. ;P
  • Yes, I like to be able to live with myself.
  • I would. Yes. You see, I tried the left thing once and threw my back out. From now on, it's the right thing for me.
  • yes but ill leave a paper near what i did explaining what i did :)
  • If somebody is watching i don't necessarily do the right thing anyway. ;P
  • Yes. I always wear my seat belt everytime I get in my car, the same boring thing(as some would think). Although Once I accidently went on past a stop sign.. It was late, and luckily noone was around :|
  • It depends on who's definition of the right thing you're going by.
  • Yes, and you will never know who is watching. I'm watching and that's enough for me.
  • And where is the fun in that exactly?
  • Yes, my mom would be proud!
  • yes. i dont live my life in front of people. i live it in front of myself and God. i have to be proud of who I am.
  • Maybe, maybe not... depends on the situation.
