Why do questions sometimes not appear on the main page when you post them? Are they prescreened for keywords or something?

They are in order of most recently submitted/answered. So if 10 people answer or submit a question before you, you may be on the second page back.

Same thing happening to me, but I don't think screening is the problem since my question was about holidays in general. Also, when I checked the time it was submitted, there were no new questions added to the mainlist at that same time.

If the question is marked as Conversational and you have opted not to see conversational questions then you won't see it. Have a look at this question: http://www.answerbag.com/q_view/484579

No screening takes place. All new answers and questions between the time you submitted the question and when you got back to the home page have also been posted. If that number is more than the number that appear on the page, then your new question has been pushed off the page. Simple as that. ;-)
