  • The Church did not officially change its position. What the Pope approved was that there is a POSSIBILITY that children do not go to Limbo and that it MAY not exist after all. The International Theological Commission reassessed this subject in depth and said it might be possible for unbaptized babies to go to heaven. The Pope merely agreed that it MIGHT be possible and that there is hope for their souls after all. This approval does not carry the authority of a papal encyclical nor does it carry the weight of a formal document from the Vatican’s Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, so I'm not sure how much it means offically to the Catholic Church's doctrine. Now, the Pope could change the Church's opinion on same sex marriage, but I doubt that he wants to. The issue on same sex marriage is different for the Catholic Church than whether babies go to limbo or not as the latter has little to no impact on today's society.
