Sounds like your lazer has broken. Get someone to fix it.. think its pretty easy as its a common problem although i dont know how to do it myself. If all else fails sell it on ebay as a faulty ps2 and state the error, and buy a new or reconditioned one.

Had the very same problem recently. Dust will eventually cover the light that reads the disc, and you'll get this message. My wife took ours apart and cleaned it with a Q-Tip. Haven't had the problem since.

First clean the disk with a soft cloth and a little water(even if it looks clean) IF that does not work..... Take out all the screws from the bottom of the caseing and GENTLY lift it off from the BACK FIRST. there is a terminal that runs from the motherboard to the power and reset buttons in the front(it runs off to the same side as the buttons) if you're not careful you will pull it out, not a problem but its a pain in the ass to get it back in. Once that is done.... Remove the plastic cover from the top of the disk drive(it has a laser radiation warning on it) put your shirt over your mouth and blow through it(this will stop spit from getting on the lens) onto the lens to remove any hard debris that may scratch it. Then take a Q-Tip with a small amount of Rubbing Alcohol on it and run it gently rub it over the lens. let it sit and dry then put a disk in it and test it, if it works put the disk drive cover back on, make sure everything is attached, and but the caseing back on.

Glad I found this. Thanks everyone for your answers. This happened to my son's this weekend and I'm going to try these hints. I'm hopeful we won't have to purchase another system. He'll be a very happy boy if I can get it fixed. Thank you!

Hi I had the same problem but recently I found a great tutorial in a tech support site that teaches you how to fix this! Here is the page for PS2 Disk Error Solution: http://www.fixya.com/support/t147428-disc_read_error Good luck

Blow it out with a can of air before you try anything else. If that doesn't work, buy a bit of lens cleaner for cameras and carefully use a q-tip to clean off the laser. You should be able to see it with out taking the thing apart.

Trade it in on an X-box,a friend of mine had a PS2 that started to show signs of going to crap, and now it's just a paperweight. He bought the X-box without anything to trade in, and kicks himself.
