  • This is one of the areas where doctrine is unclear. We know that if we want to live forever as family units, then we must be in the Celestial kingdom. However, does this mean that those that are in the lower kingdoms will not recognize friends and family that are in the same kingdoms? That is not known. I have heard various speculations on this topic, but I have never heard anything that I would take as authoritative.

  • Mormons believe that the marriage relationship is of functional importance both on earth and in heaven. (Though it is certain we don't understand completely how it functions.) Mormons also believe the marriage is a covenantal relationship. The covenant, or contract, which establishes typical marriages, only has authority for the duration of mortality. If, in heaven, we wish to keep the same relationship that we had on earth, then it must be established by a more enduring covenant. This relationship is more than one of mere familiarity and friendliness, but is one of mutual responsibility. That relationship of mutual love and responsibility is functionally important and critical to accomplishing those things which God wishes us to accomplish for our benefit.
