Grazing animals use more water per kilogram of food to produce than crops do (in general), especially as crops are generally annual and animals live for a number of years before they are slaughtered for food. Animals need food (which needs water to grow), water to drink, slaughtering, processing and transport. Crops need water, harvesting, processing & transport.
