because you damage so many cells in any second. they need to be replaced, and cell division is the only way that can happen.

The human body constantly remodels itself in response to it's environment - growth, what the body is doing, what energy, fluid and nutrients are available, what damage or illness has been done to the body and also in order to replace worn out cells - cell division is necessary for this remodelling to occur. And actually, neurogenesis - the development of new brain cells, does occur beyond childhood - in a region of the brain called the hippocampus, which helps to process and store new memories and spatial information.

Well it also depends on the differences of cells here. You constanly lose thousands of skins cells, so it obbiously needs to divide. But your brain you have millions of extra cells far more than you need to actually think and live, and because you head grows the least of your body, dividing brain cells will just make you brain more cramped, talk about tension headache!

The underlining is what makes cells divide? There is a cell cycle that regulates the growth and division of cells. Nerve cells don't divide very quickly because they are stuck in a phase of the cell cycle termed G-zero (usually written G sub 0 ). Other body cells enter G-zero and are "awakened" from it by growth signals. Nerve cells lack the ability to get out of G-zero.
