A bit of both, but moreso fools. Great minds really think alike in only a few situations - when needing a solution and both come up with the same solution that work or they both work on a solution. Mainly, though, when both minds know that they need to be different, in general, to work well together! Fools, however, will do the same thing again and again without change even though change is obviously needed. It doesn't matter who they are.

I think both parts of this old adage are applicable in certain circumstances Great minds may have the same idea but then basically the fool will lack to understand the point so will not differ because he has little comprehension. It is in reality just a sarcastic counter to a complimentary or egotistical remark remark.

I like the latter, since I just discovered it today from you on another thread. That explains the lockstep/lemming mentality that seems to drive most ideologies. That is more certain than that "great minds think alike." Many great minds don't think alike at all...they think independently and therein lies the greatness. The converse is true. The lack of ability or desire to think independently dooms one to lemming status forever. :)
