They didn't, until the War on Poverty made it possible to replace the married father with a government check. And, as that good liberal Democrat Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan said, where you have millions of boys who don't know who their fathers are, you have social chaos. Such as a rate of about 25% of young black men being either in jail, on bail or on parole.
