  • An internet troll is a person who corrupts: forums, websites, chatrooms etc... with spam, profanity, garbage. In answerbag, a troll is a person who goes around downrating people and giving them negavite amount of points and so. A troll in answerbag posts garbage, senseless things and floods with spam and unwanted things. Hence, the word trolling is used for the action of a troll.
  • Ever watched a fishing show on television? the boats go out into the ocean and search for a possible school of fish. different fish require different bait and method of catching. Trolling for fish is a baited hooked and line, stretched out behind the boat. the boat takes off and the rod and reel are cast behind the boat. the moving bait and line is called trolling for fish.
  • I think of a troll as a short, bug eyed person with frizzy hair.
  • Alanpro is right - and the kind of troll isn't the fishing kind. Trolls are also bad creatures who live under bridges or out in the wild and catch and eat mammals. See kids' tale "Billy Goat Gruff" and also the Tolkien books. In Norway trolls've become sort of a mascot, though. They like their trolls.
  • To improve on anon-kun's remark, the internet usage is actually a hash of both. The troll's behavior is that of a troll, but one can also think of the message left behind as the line the troll is trolling for fish with. The fish is the flamewar that ensues to make the troll feel better about his/her/hisher pathetic empty life.
