U.S. restaurant portion sizes are huge, we have a national obesity problem, and people LEAVE a lot of restaurant food - lettuce, bread, and other stuff. High-end eateries serve small portions. Should lower-end ones cut portion sizes?

They SHOULD, but the doggy bag culture has taken hold. People now expect to have some portion of their food to take home and eat later. A second meal is taken care of with the purchase of restaurant food. The convenience of the "two meal system" I believe is what makes a lot of Americans, especially families, go out to eat. ` To editorialize just a bit: it seems ridiculous. You are paying a portion of restaurant markups and tips (which is almost mandatory in the US) for food that is cold and of a far lesser quality than when it was fresh. For your dollars, you are better off getting something preprepared from the grocery store.

People need to be more responsible for what they put into their bodies. It isn't the restaurants job to control how much their customers eat. My husband and I love the large portions. We can split a meal and both eat a nice dinner for half the price.
