There is a very good chapter on this in Bob Burg's "Winning Without Intimidation." Bob suggests writing to the event host (like a radio station manager or local promoter) and making your case with compliments and a few key words: If you can't do this, I wil cetainly understand, but I certainly appreciate your consideration." Thank them in advance and at the end and give let them know how much you admire this performer and appreciate the promoter for bringing them to town. Know somebody who knows somebody who in turn knows the band or someone who has access to such things and if this is not possible bring a butt load of cash with you and see if you can't buy your way backstage...Of course if you are like talking about going backstage to the high schools play or the backstage to the band that is playing the cafe down the street, just go back there anyways as though you own the place...

I got backstage passes to a concert once because I worked at the hotel the band was staying at. I worked as a maid and cleaned their rooms. It was awesome. So working at the venue or at the hotel works. My sister works at the concert venue and gets to meet all sorts of people.
