If they are upfront and honest, you should purchase something if you listen to their whole sales pitch and would like to support them, but you should not feel obligated to purchase because it is a sales job and not everyone is expected to buy.

In the way things are now Im a little leary - yes I have

You should be very careful and very skeptical of any door to door sales person.

Some of these are for real, but many are not. I'd be skeptical ALL the time. There are people who recruit kids to go door to door this way and say all these wholesome-sounding things - but there's no trip and no scholarship. I buy Girl-Scout cookies at the front door, but very little else. If I want a thing, I go buy it at a store or on line; if I don't want a thing, I don't want someone trying to sell it to me at my front door using a guilt trip. I actually had one fellow try to intimidate me, years ago. He stood too close and said that I was a prejudiced person and that's why I wasn't buying.

Be very skeptical. I actually had a guy come to my door with the same exact story... and I bought it. I bought and paid for two magazine subscriptions which I NEVER received. I should have known when he didn't leave me an invoice or any kind of information on who to call if my magazines didn't arrive. Live and learn, eh?

yes. While i have lived in my home for 19 years, periodically i will get out of the blue knocks on the door with the same old song and dance about a contest and a trip and gaining points by selling these subscriptions. These people are always fast talkers and immediatley try to control the conversation by jumping the subject to something they see right there, like animals and children. bottom line, helping for a good cause or not. i did not ask them to come by nor do i need to pay 70x the price for something i can get for dirt cheap.

I just sent tw o very likable kids away. Their pitch was the best I'd seen. Each of them were college bound. They started with story that they were doing an interview about education and were interviewing me an the neighbors so they could write an essay about the benefits of higher education. Then they switched to selling magazines which would be delivered to the our military overseas or me. They were also earning points for a vacation trip and $1000 cash prize. They had a lot of time invested in me when they left.
