  • The Quest Study Bible, NIV, published by Zondervan is a wonderful study Bible and will be an appreciated gift.
  • You can go online to ChristianBook.com and look through all the Bibles they have for sale. They have every version; KJV, NIV, ... (I believe.) You can click on the Bible and see excerpts, if they have colored maps, concordance. You can look specifically for Study Bibles. Personally, I was given the Women's Study Bible a couple of years ago. It has wonderful notes of explanations on the sides of the pages, indepth study of the many women of the Bible, there is also fifty-two weekly sheets for a more indepth study. Of course, this will only work well if the person you are buying it for is female. I don't know if they have one specific for men. I'm not suggesting that you must buy from here, but you can get an idea of what the different Bibles have. I have seen many of these in bookstores such as 'Books-a-Million.' Good luck, there are quite a few to choose from. With prayer God will lead you to the one just right for your friend. • I got a leather bound NIV Full Life Study bible with my name engraved on it as a gift and I love it. I have given a teen girl study bible with her name engraved on it and she loved it. My advice is get the nicest bible you can afford and that you think might be appropriate for that person and have it engraved.
  • This one is pretty good http://www.amazon.com/Satanic-Bible-Caesar-999/dp/1430302100/ref=pd_bbs_sr_2/102-0081096-1216118?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1177695633&sr=8-2
  • I think that you have a good idea regarding the KJV, especially for a study Bible. I still enjoy reading the KJV for its literary beauty, but its language is so archaic and its translation quality far enough from the mark that it is really hard to study and get the real meaning. One thing to look for is a good cross-reference system. Reading other verses that touch on the same subject is one of the surest ways of getting the Bible's own interpretation. A good concordance is also very useful. The editor's notes and commentaries may or may not be useful because they are usually that person's own views and might be in harmony with the Scriptures or not. Maps are also a very helpful feature. After years of study and teaching, i am biased toward the New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures, with References. There are several good modern translations, but this one is my favorite because of the literal yet easy-to-read nature of its translation and its lack of unnecessary frills. You can get it on a voluntary donation basis by going to www.watchtower.org. Hope you find what you are looking for.
  • John McArthurs study bible is useful.
  • geneva bible. king james did not have a good reason for another translation. king james did not like the geneva bible notes, like exodus 1:17 geneva bible note that said hebrew midwives were right to disobey the egyptain kings command to kill all the male babies. king james did not want anyone to disobey him. the puritains and pilgrims used the geneva bible and did not join the church of england. king james did not like them. after the king james bible was printed in 1611 king james made ownership of the geneva bible a felony. the geneva bible was translated from the original hebrew and greek. i do not believe the king james version is a bad translation. tolle lege press, genevabible.com and joyful home resources has geneva bibles.
  • I would recommend The Discipleship Study Bible by Westminster John Knox Press. It's NRSV. It features introductory essays to each book of the Bible by top-notch contemporary Bible scholars, the complete text of the New Revised Standard Version, including Apocrypha, a timeline, 16 pages of color maps, descriptions and notes within the text, and a concise concordance.
