  • I make flour tortillas, and I only do it when I am completely out of the store bought ones. You could make a bunch in advance and freeze them. I do that with some things. I think it makes it easier.
  • Yes, and it is worth the work, *unless* you have a good tortilleria nearby. Man I miss California! :( I only make them for special occasions. For example, if I've made chile colorado or chile verde. For standard stuff I use store-bought. But we're lucky to have a small, hispanic grocery here that ships 'em in fresh from some outfit in Chicago. I just noticed this question is from a couple years back. Are you still making your own and has it gotten any easier? You are using a press, right? Patting those things out by hand is murderous! ;)
  • I have done tortillas from scratch and I think is worth the effort because of the fresh flavour these acquire. It will definitely get easier as you prepare them more often, but i would suggest you buy a tortilla flattener. It is a round piece of equipment in which you put the ball of "masa" (the uncooked product) and it flattens it into the shape of a tortilla. An essential tool if you are making them from scratch. If you want to avoid the very beginning where it's hard, then buy a product called "Maseca" Any Mexican store would sell it. You just add hot water, flatten it, cook it, and it's done! :) Good luck!
