I am a pastor's wife, so let me speak from experience. Firstly, you have to have a deep knowledge of the Lord and an imitimate relationship of prayer with Him, through Christ Jesus. Equally important is a dedicated submission to the word of God, the Bible. You have to read it and immerse yourself in its teachings, being willing to learn every day of your life. I know when my husband was ordained, he was given a special Bible, and was ordered to keep studying from it daily. Then you need to sit at the feet of someone who is a good evangelist. If you do not know anyone personally, then get out DVD's of Billy Graham. You cannot get a better role model than him. His evangelistic sermons follow a great pattern, and show simplicity of language and sincerity of person. His content is great, and his use of anectdotes well controlled. Most modern evangelists owe much if not all their style to Billy Graham. The good thing about Graham is that he never sacrificed content for pizzazz. I am not against healings (who could be?) but in an evengelistic context, they should complement the preaching of the word, not upstage it. To help you develop your own style, also do a lot of reading of old style evangelists such as Dwight L Moody, Wesley, Spurgeon, Mordecai Ham (who was an inspiration for Billy Graham) and others. Avoid the televangelists: with few exceptions their lives are not always up to scratch and their content lacking. Read widely and be well informed about all manner of things, so that you can speak with authority.(Be prepared to say: I do not know the answer, BUT I will do some research for you: give me a contact address and I will get back to you) Bookmark useful sites on the net eg http://thinkexist.com/quotes/top/occupation/evangelist/ Hope this helps. Praying for you now.
