I would say a party would be the kind of company that is there that is bubbly and fun that just likes to have fun and friendly friends and play music and dance and laught tells story's and snacks have tea or coffee or wine. in your home or someone elses and a gathering sounds like a family gathering or a church gathering sales gathering like an open house or realestate sales. The point a gathering becomes a party when you are have a good time...;)

Gathering's are just what I advertise my paties as, so that if they're crap people won't be disapointed. But they're never crap, and as soon as the first person arrives it's a party:D
