  • I think people choose to be soldiers for lots of reasons - but mostly to help protect their country. If we didn't have soldiers, we'd be enslaved by another nation or dictator and that would certainly be worse, don't you think?
  • To learn a trade. I joined the air force, fortunately I never went into a live combat zone, though.
  • they think 'it'won't happen to them!
  • Because they are heroes. Even if they never get a medal or never see combat, they don't know what they will be asked to risk once they put on the uniform, and they are voluntarily putting themselves in a position where the only thing that stands between the people they love and the vilest savages on earth is their own body. We all owe them respect and support. Try to think of something nice you can do for a soldier or a soldier's family.
  • Even though they know it can be horrible they are fighting for there country and doing something good. If there not doing it for the country and doing it because they want the money and figure it would be an easy way out of going to school and what not. Well it's not really easy but I'm pretty sure you'll know what I'm talking about.
  • To protect our country and our freedoms. I know a lot of soldiers that enlist because their dad or brother or grandpa did. It's a very noble thing.
  • Most believe that they can make a difference, even though their own comfort is compromised. It is the same for police and other emergency personnel. They are special people.
  • I think people do it for different reasons. My cousin wanted to be a career Marine Pilot. Some do it because the army will help pay for them to go to college, others want to be heros etc. No one can say why someone would want to join because there are a myriad of reasons, it all is unique to the individual.
  • I think they are attracted by so called adventure and once they have enlisted they find out the mistake they made. When enlisting the facts are hidden and the reality of the situation is also. There is no glory in war.
  • Because they don't see it as contributing to the misery of war, rather, they feel that everything that their country's government does is right and that the people who live in their country deserve to live more than anyone else in the world solely because of their nationality. They also believe it's an easy way to either get their hands on some money, a gun, friends or the knowledge of how to efficiently kill people. There is also the possibility that they're brainwashed by a high power/cultural mix that provides flimsy definitions of the words 'freedom', 'threat' and 'defence'.
