Emotion came even before thought. Emotion is what teaches an animal that can learn how to survive. Suppose a primitive animal eats a plant that is bad for it, knowing no differently. It gets sick. Emotionally it feels bad/unhappy. If it recovers it may associate the plant with that feeling. It may develop a fear of the plant. The emotion prevents it from repeating its earlier mistake and thus gives the animal a survival skill.
