No - I consider it an unbelief system.
-
No. I simply find the possibility of no creator less improbably than any god anybody has told me about. I don't *believe* it, I simply live my life as if it were true because it is less unlikely than any other suggestion. If I ever find something to believe, I will have no atheistic belief to undo.
-
It would be a belief system if atheism were defined as "the belief that there are no deities", but that is in an incorrect definition. Atheism is simply "non-theism" (the two are synonymous). Therefore, all that is required to be an atheist is NOT to be a theist. Since theism is the belief in deities, atheism is merely the lack of belief in deities.

When someone lacks the belief in something (God in this case) it would be wrong to automatically claim that this disbelief is a 'belief system'. If I tell someone that there is an invisible elephant walking around on Pluto and you think it is highly unlikely that this is true, would you then have a belief system because you lack the belief in this Pluto dweller? Or what about the tooth fairy- if we lack the belief that there is a real tooth fairy, is this a belief system? I am an atheist just because I think it is extremely improbable that there is a creator that has just always somehow 'been there'. There is no evidence to back up this claim. I lack the belief in a God on the same level as I lack belief in the tooth fairy or the invisible elephant on Pluto. However, I leave a little gap of about 0.000001% open in case someone ever comes up with clear evidence that there is a God,(or a tooth fairy, or an invisible elephant on Pluto) even though I am pretty sure evidence will never be found. I just leave this little gap because otherwise I'd feel that I have a closed mind and I would want to be able to accept hard evidence just 'in case'.

A belief system has to have some sort of unity to it. Atheism does not. Although it is a "faith", it is more an individual one. There are societies around, but no overarching system.
-
I'd consider it a "belief" system, but not a religion. You can have a belief system about anything.
-
I'd say it's more of a philosophy than a religion.
-
yes. it is what a person beleives in, afterall. even if that beleif is in the non-existance of a god, it is still a beleif. however, it's not organized like a religion and it doesn't tend to offer a means of spirituality, like a religion.

I encounter many atheists who have a negative reaction to the notion of "belief" and it thus becomes a natural psychological motivation to interpret atheism as a "non belief system." They would much rather like to exterminate the parellel existing between the basis for theism and atheism. The fact of the matter is that atheism does involve beliefs. It has historically been defined in contrast simply because the belief in god/gods was the original de facto argumen. Since the premise of no God will necessarily propogate a set of derivitave beliefs, one can easily say that is indeed a belief system. I think a proper study of logic and mathematics would agree.

IMO Atheism is a belief the same as Agnostic is, Christianity is ect ect. We are talking about something which can not be proved (atm) regardless of your personal beliefs there is no proof for or against any religion. Therefore if you can answer the question "What religion are you?" with "Atheist" then it is a belief!
-
It is not a "system". A system, by definition, has more then one part. Atheism is a single belief- one part. A religion has many parts.
-
No, atheism is not a belief system, it is a rejection of a single belief (of a god). Atheists may have one or many beliefs systems, but their being an atheist is not one of them.
-
Nope, there's no system behind Atheism. We don't have creeds, we don't have a central entity we are following, we don't have dogmas, we don't have a book to follow, we don't have a belief, it's not even a collective train of thought. The definition alone is enough to realize (I wish the religious who choose to try to debate us would see this) it is not a religion.
-
Actually, it's very difficult to see much difference at all between the zealots on either side. They are both a bit obnoxious. (Sometimes more than a bit.)
-
For the most part, no, atheism is simply not believing in a higher power. However, there are those who have made it pivotal to their identity. It defines them, and they seem to be almost fanatical about it. Then I believe it has evolved (no pun intended) into a belief system.
-
No, I would call it a personal observation and leave it at that.
-
No, atheism is one singular belief, or disbelief if you like. A system usually requires more than one belief.
-
I consider atheism to be a concept.. of reality.
-
well if you class logic and facts as a religion .. then yes
-
I've seen no proof for ANY god. More of an UN-belief system.
-
It's the other way around.
-
A cult is a bunch of people who are brainwashed and just in denial. Athiests are not a group. They are people world wide who have come to this conclusion, they are not banded together as a rule.
-
Are non-astrologers part of a cult?
-
Haha you keep asking all these questions about atheists that are actually statements, and now you tell us you don't know what a cult, or atheists are? Spread teh hatez mang.
-
No, atheism is not a cult. Atheism is the belief that God does not exist. Richard Dawkins has a cult I think, its comprised of especially braindead atheists.
-
Traditionally, a cult didn't necessarily mean a group of radical, brainwashed people, as it's taken to be now a days. It simply meant followers of an exclusive system of religious beliefs. In that sense, every religion, and atheism, could be defined as a cult.
-
No, atheism just means you dont believe in god, it affects noone but the person themselves. A cult is a radical religious group that uses their beliefs for violent or destructive means.
-
The English word cult comes from the Latin cultus meaning worship. In one definition, any religion can be considered a cult. However the most common current definition of cult is a religion or religious sect generally considered to be extremist or false, with its followers often living in an unconventional manner under the guidance of an authoritarian, charismatic leader. According to the Cult Information Centre, every cult can be defined as a group having all of the following five characteristics: 1. It uses psychological coercion to recruit, indoctrinate and retain its members. 2. It forms an elitist totalitarian society. 3. Its founder leader is self-appointed, dogmatic, messianic, not accountable and has charisma. 4. It believes 'the end justifies the means' in order to solicit funds recruit people. 5. Its wealth does not benefit its members or society. Atheism does not meet all of the five characteristics. http://www.cultinformation.org.uk/faq.html#cult With love in Christ.

Definitely the other way around. Atheism is the furthest classification of people from a cult that can be possible. You can't even say that Atheists are a "group" because in no way do they practice the same rituals or mass together to celebrate their identities. Atheists don't even have identities as being Atheist, it's simply the absence of mind of a Theistic view. Define Cult? followers of an exclusive system of religious beliefs and practices. Christianity IS considered to be a cult by definition of the Websters dictionary. The only reason it escapes this definition is because christianity has a large amount of followers. Contrary to the definition a cult is believed by the public to only have a very few amount of members. Also, in some cases, a cult has practices where it's members commit crimes, are evil and looked down upon by the public, this is an incorrect version of the definition of a cult, this is something that people have made up and so falsely have spread around. Another reason why Christianity BY the public opinion is not considered a cult. Keep in mind that even though the public views differ, what was listed above is the official definition of a cult. . To sum it up, the reason Christianity is not considered a cult, is because the unofficial definition of a cult does not describe the religion based on public inaccurate opinions. In fact it is a cult which differs in no way than the run of the mill cult.
-
How did I know that it was you who asked this? Do you try to be woefully ignorant? You're definitely succeeding.
-
The word "cult" has several definitions, but they all center on religious beliefs and/or practices, often with a tone of extremism, or at least unorthodoxy. Atheism cannot be a cult because it is not religious and not centered around a particular belief, but rather, the lack of one.
