Timing chains usually don't have tensioner so much as guides. That rattle is your engine's death rattle.

Make sure it is the timing chain. I have a 99 with the 4.0 SOHC. After reading all the stories of the "Death Rattle" I was concerned. After looking carefully the length of exhaust system, I found the noise, which I would have sworn was coming from under the hood, was a loose skid plate forward of the muffler on the passenger side exhaust pipe, the tack welds had come loose. After securing the loose plate with a $1.49 stainless hose clamp, no more rattle!

Generally, timing chains "rattle" because the chain has stretched and/or the chain guides are worn/broken. The tensioner for the timing chain operates on oil pressure and is not adjustable. The fix is to replace the timing chain, chain guides and chain tensioner as a set. Good luck.

4.0l sohc rattle on startup is the chain tensioners and guides. I am a ford mechanic for the pass 20 year.
