Nope, no Sega characters are available in the current versions of Smash Brothers. That doesn't mean they won't be in future versions of the game, though. While Sega representatives have said that they aren't currently in talk with Nintendo about including Sega characters in a Smash Brothers game, they said that they would be interested in such a collaboration. The Sonic rumor was started by Electronic Gaming Monthly as an April Fool's joke. Since then it has become a sort of phenomenon. Sorry, but they aren't in there.

WARNING! OPINIONATED ANSWER! No. Sonic and Tails never were in 'Melee', and if I had my way, they'd stay out of 'Brawl' for the Wii. I have nothing against them except they, like Snake ARE NOT Nintendo characters.

A press release made by Nintendo has officially confirmed that Sonic will be a playable Character in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. The statement was backed by screenshots of Sonic in the actual game, and the information was immediately sent to game stores across the U.S. so that they could advertise and boost pre-order sales. Sonic is now a verifiable fact in Brawl, along with these new characters: Wario Snake (from Metal Gear) Pit (from Kid Icarus) Zero Suite Samus (Samus w/o her power suit) Ike (from Fire Emblem) Pokemon Trainer (from Pokemon, duh) Diddy Kong (from the Donkey Kong series) Meta Knight (Kirby series) King Dedede (Also from Kirby) Lucas (Earthbound series) This late in the game, it is HIGHLY unlikely that any other new characters will be introduced, sorry Sonic fans, that likely means no Tails or Knuckles.
