I don't know the very first time. Don't anyone does. But it was in use when I was on what used to be called "Bulletin Boards" before they had graphics and all you had in a chat room or group or place like Genie or Compuserve was text. Also a place called Delphi. That was late 70's early 80's, and we used lol and many others back then.

i duno but i remember it being used profusely in the popular days of BBS (early 90's) and it bugged the hell out of me. nowa days it just makes me want to stab people in the ribs with a pen.
