  • The city of Woodbine was founded by James Allen Gillett on July 16, 1887. He named it Woodbine after his former hometown of Woodbine, Illinois. In 1872, James Gillett built a water powered grist mill on Lyon's Creek. Local farmers could bring in their grain to be ground. The mill burned in 1892 and was not rebuilt. The first telephone in Woodbine was from the switchboard in the hardware store to the A.A. and G.G. Gillett residences. Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Woodbine%2C_Kansas
