According to Oregon Geographic Names, Takilma was originally called "Taklamah", probably by Col. T.W. Draper of the Waldo Copper Company for an Native Americans in the United StatesIndian chief. The name was changed to "Takilma" in 1902, after the Takelma tribe, who lived on the Rogue River (Oregon)Rogue River. Takilma post office ran from 1902 until 1967.
