  • The precise details of this are not entirely clear. However, we are told that in the highest kingdom (the Celestial kingdom) there are three potential levels. It is only in the highest of these levels that we can enjoy the ultimate reward, that of having the ability to parent their own spirit children and create new worlds on which they can experience mortality. Those that occupy the lower levels of the Celestial kingdom would still be living in the presence of the Father and would be able to enjoy the fellowship of their Earthly families but would not be able to continue to progress beyond that point. It is only those that have been married in the temple that can obtain the highest level. Those who do everything else correctly, just don't get married in the temple despite having had an adequate opportunity to do so, will be relegated to one of the lower levels. Note that I wrote "adequate opportunity." Many people die before they get old enough to marry. Additionally, there are not equal numbers of men and women in the world. (I think that there are generally more women then men except in China where the one child per couple rule is resulting in more girls being aborted as parents prefer to have sons.) Therefore, not everybody is going to have an adequate opportunity to marry. God, of course, will be the ultimate judge of who has had the opportunity. I am sure that there is some mechanism by which these people will be given the opportunity to marry. However, it has not yet been revealed at this time. However, in my answer to http://www.answerbag.com/q_view.php/19149, I speculate on a possible mechanism to resolve this problem. ****************** "John Pacella: Heavenly Father has a mortal body, can he be in the lower levels and celestial kingdom at the same time?" John, I challenge you to produce one DOCTRINAL source use by us that states that the Father has a MORTAL body. That is not and never has been taught by anyone in this church. The belief is that He has a perfect, IMMORTAL body, not a mortal one. ***************** "HungryGuy: Bob, if that's true, then why do you Mormons worship an adulturous pedophile? One doesn't need to be a Bible expert to know that there's something very wrong with your 'religion.'" You know, criticizing someone else's sexual proclivities strikes me as awfully hypocritical of you, HungryGuy. After all, you are the one who has complained about religious people criticizing your rather extreme sexual practices. As for the specific charges you have leveled, they have been dealt with elsewhere. So, I am not going to go into them here. ***************** "John Pacella: Glenn: by mortal, I meant a body of Flesh and Bones... I know that you believe his body of flesh and bones is immortal. Just a use of the wrong word(s) on my part." If you are as knowledgeable about our beliefs as you claim to be, then you should know that we believe that EVERY one who is resurrected receives an immortal body of flesh and bones. The Father's having one does not limit His ability to go where ever He wants to go. As for the levels of the Celestial kingdom. We are told that those that to these levels are ministering servants to those that achieve the highest level. What this indicates to me is that the lower levels are not separate places. They are separate levels of achievement. Just as the servants in a wealthy persons house are sharing the house with their employer and are able to wait on him, those that find themselves in the lower levels of the Celestial kingdom are able to be with the Father and He can go anywhere He wishes. The difference is one of authority, not location.
  • God will never give us a commandment without giving us a way to comply. Those who, for reasons outside their control, never marry during this life will not be punished for that. We can take that to mean that they will have the chance to marry after they die.
  • Just as people can be baptised for the dead they too can be sealed for the dead, or confirmed, or endowed... of course it is the choice of the person for which these ordinances are performed whether they will accept them or not. It is not necessary to be married in this life there will be an opportunity to be married after death, possibly even find your eternal companion after death. Hope this clears some thing up.
  • Continuing a little from answer #1 from Glenn Blaylock, many members believe that the Millenium (a period of a thousand years where Christ will rule on Earth after his Second Coming) may be the time when those who have not had this opportunity will receive it. In this and many other senses, the Millenium serves a purpose as a time where many things can be set in order, records made available that were lost, and temple work completed. The scriptures tell us that Satan will be bound during that time, reinforcing the idea that it is a period where much can be accomplished and done without opposition and stumbling blocks. Also, in answer to Hungry Guy's comment on Glenn's answer, can I suggest that while you may believe that only Biblical doctrines are sound, it is not a useful way to judge answers on LDS doctrine from members of the LDS church. Just as a Muslim will offer answers from the Koran that you may not find in the Bible, so too, LDSs will naturally use the whole range of scripture available to them (the Bible, the Book of Mormon, the Doctrine and Covenants, and the Pearl of Great Price) in answering questions from an LDS perspective.
  • Wow I didn't even know this was a critera to get to a higher level. Seems a bit unfair for those who never found their soulmate!
  • My understanding was that an unmarried daughter can be assisted by her father. I don't know if the same goes for sons/men.
